BARROW HOUSE, MONASTEREVIN, CO KILDARE

The Executors of the Late Stan Cosgrove, internationally known vet, have instructed Jordan Town & Country Estate Agents, Newbridge to offer his residence for sale, a lovely period house in a mature setting fronting onto the River Barrow in Monasterevin.

A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN

Barrow House was the home of Stan and Maureen Cosgrove since the late 80’s before his passing in 2019. Maureen used to describe Barrow House as her “little piece of heaven”. Truly an unique and wonderful period property over 2 floors with excellent living/entertaining space on the ground floor and 5 double bedrooms (all ensuite) on the first floor. This magical and secluded house of approximately c. 5,030 sq.ft. (c. 468 sq.m.) nestles on an elevated 1.2 acre site which overlooks the River Barrow with an oblique view of the Grand Canal coupled with a swimming pool and tennis court set in the mature landscaped grounds which enjoy an abundance of shrubs, trees and flowers.

FAMILY HISTORY

Barrow House was the home of the renowed equine veterinarian Stan Cosgrove and his wife Maureen, who established the Troytown Veterinary Hospital in Co Kildare, one of the most highly respected horse treatment facilities in the world. Highly accomplished, Stan Cosgrove is best known for 3 key milestones in his career, the first is his involvement and part ownership of Shergar, the remarkable 1981 double Derby (Epsom & Irish) winner, the second is being one of only 2 Irish veterinarians to be elected president of the British Equine Veterinary Association with the other being his cousin Max and the third is his role as manager of Moyglare Stud between 1971 and 2013, which produced a long list of successful Group winners.

THE VENICE OF IRELAND

This is an ideal family home situated in the village within walking distance of the train station on the InterCity Rail Line for trains from Dublin to the South West and West; Dublin-Heuston (40 mins), Grand Canal Dock (50 mins), and access to the M7 Motorway (5 mins) at Junction 14.

Monasterevin lies on the River Barrow in Co Kildare and on the Grand Canal. It is also on Ireland’s canal network, linking the Grand Canal and the River Barrow. Monasterevin has an unusual number of bridges which has led to the more romantic of us describing it as “The Venice of Ireland”. The Grand Canal allowed the local distilling industry to flourish. An aqueduct built in 1826 carries the Grand Canal over the River Barrow.

ACCOMMODATION

Barrow House is set across two floors and accessed via a grand entrance hall which leads onto 4 receptions rooms, charaterised by exposed original timber beams that provide ample living and entertainment space, whilst also leading on to the expansive garden via French doors.

The ground floor oozes character and charm and comprises of the kitchen/breakfast area complete with a four-oven Aga and integrated electric appliances, the dining room and an impressive library. A pantry, utility room and cloakroom make up the rest of the space.

There are 5 spacious bedroom suites that benefit from views across the grounds and onto the River Barrow and oblique views of the Grand Canal Aqueduct. Located within the grounds is an outdoor swimming pool, set within gated patio area, as well as a full-sized tennis court, whilst a detached garage provides ample secure parking.
